Genesis 41:1-8 – A Bad Dream

Joseph has been waiting in prison for two years. It might have been easy for him to wonder if not only the chief cupbearer but also God has forgotten about him. But God is working everything out according to His plan, and His people must have patience. There is a time set for the deliverance of God’s people from each of their own particular troubles, and that time will come, even if it seems a long wait, and when it comes it will be seen to be the best time and worth waiting for.

God is going to use Pharaoh’s dreams to bring Joseph to a position of power. If we see these dreams of Pharaoh as just ordinary dreams, they might seem very typical of the foolishness and unreality of all dreams now. But there is something different about Pharaoh’s dreams – they are a direct revelation of God to Pharaoh, and Pharaoh realises that this isn’t just a typical strange dream, but there is a message, and he is greatly troubled.

Pharaoh wants his magicians to tell him what the dreams mean, but they can’t even begin to offer an explanation which must have bothered Pharaoh even more. But when human ability and understanding fail, it makes God’s power and wisdom all the more spectacular.
