John 14:21-26 – Obedience

Keeping Christ’s commandments is the best test of love to Christ. It isn’t talking about Christ, but doing His will and walking in His way, that is the proof of our being true believers. Good feelings and desires are useless if they are not accompanied by action. Living and doing well are the only real evidence of grace. Where the Holy Spirit is, there will always be a holy life.

Now, we are not to think that keeping Christ’s commandments saves us. Our best works are full of imperfection. We are saved by the grace of God, not because of anything we have done or can do. Keeping Christ’s commandments is just the outworking of new life. We love Him, so we want to do what He says.

There are special blessings for those who love Christ and prove it by obeying Him. Walking closely with God will bring us comfort, joy, and peace. Happiness comes with holiness.

These verses also show us that one part of the Holy Spirit’s work is to teach and help us to remember things. Our Lord knows the ignorance and forgetfulness of our nature. He graciously promises that when He leaves the world, His people shall have a teacher and reminder. We should pray daily for the help of the Holy Spirit. It is His job to illuminate the soul, to open they eyes of understanding, and to guide us into all truth. He can make dark places light and rough places smooth. He can keep the truth in our minds and make us ready for every good word and work.
