Luke 20:27-40 – Eternal Life

The reason the Sadducees are asking Jesus this question is not only to discredit Him, but to pour contempt on the whole idea of a life to come. So, they invent the most absurd story they can think of. When we are faced with questions like this, with hypothetical situations, and crazy scenarios, we need to remember to focus on what we do know instead of getting drawn into arguments about the unknown. A thousand things beyond death are unintelligible to us right now. What we need to do is wait patiently. What we know not now, we will know later.

The happiness of Christians in heaven is eternal. Weakness, sickness, and disease do not exist. The curse is removed. Death is dead. Heaven is something we should think about quite a lot. It is something that can cheer us up and encourage us in our life as a Christian. The very thought of Heaven enables us to bear our hard times on earth more patiently, because we know that perfect joy is coming – a time when there will be no more hardship. Thinking of Heaven also helps us to enjoy this life even more. We always have something better to look forward to, so we don’t have to dread things changing or ending.

Faith in a resurrection and a life to come has been the universal belief of all God’s people from the beginning of the world. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Moses are men who look forward to a better inheritance than they have here below. The knowledge of this truth will cheer us in our trials and comfort us when it is time to die. Our God is “not a God of the dead, but of the living.”
