Mark 5:21-34 – Great Suffering That Led To Great Faith

As Jesus returns to the other side of the lake, the crowds return including a ruler named Jairus who comes humbly to Jesus out of love for his dying daughter and a belief that Jesus can heal her. Jesus agrees to go with him, and they are followed by a large crowd.

As the crowd presses around Jesus, a woman quietly forces her way through them. This woman has been suffering from a disease for 12 years, a disease that makes her unclean and unable to worship at the Temple. She has tried all sorts of human cures, but it has only made things worse. But then she hears about Jesus; she knows she needs help, and she believes that Jesus can give it to her. So great is her belief in Jesus’ power, that she knows she only needs to touch Him to be healed. So, she does, and her healing is instant and complete. Jesus, though, stops and wants to know who touched Him. Not because He doesn’t know, but because He wants the woman to come and confess to all around her what Jesus has done for her. So, with fear and trembling, she comes forward and tells her story which couldn’t have been easy for her to do. Then Jesus gives her assurance that her faith and healing are real. In this story, we also see a picture of what our lives are like, separated from God by sin, trying to fix things ourselves, and finally coming to Christ for salvation.
