Genesis 10:1-20 – Children of Japheth and Ham

God who has killed all men, except for Noah’s family, now gives them the ability to be fruitful and multiply. Japheth’s descendants are the future European Gentiles, many of whom will one day be part of God’s Church.

In the list of Ham’s descendants we read about Nimrod. Nimrod is described as a mighty man. Some think this means he is one who is very ambitious and wants to use his power and strength to rule over others. He is a famous hunter. The phrase ‘before the LORD’ can also be translated ‘against the LORD.’ This shows us how proud Nimrod is. He wants to be greater than God, to rule over others in defiance of God, thinking he is a match for God. He does get into power and rules over different peoples and builds different cities. He doesn’t seem to be humble and content, but proud and rebellious, always wanting more.

These descendants of Ham will be subdued before Israel. From these verses we can see that they are many, rich, and living in good locations, but they are still under God’s curse for their sin. Evil men and women may prosper in this world, but God’s curse always works really and terribly but not always visibly or immediately.
