Genesis 12:4-9 – Obedience and Worship

Abram obeys all that God has told him to do without delay or arguing. He is 75, and he might have preferred to rest and settle down, but he does what God says. Sarai, his wife, must have been a great comfort to him, as she also has to leave everything, but she seems as willing to obey as Abram. He also takes his nephew Lot and the servants. Those who serve and follow God should do all they can, like Abram, to bring others to serve and follow Him as well.

When Abram comes to Canaan, God makes clear to him that this is the land where God is taking him, and now God promises to give it to his children. God makes this promise even though there are Canaanites still living there, and Abram has no place yet to settle in and is forced to move about. Abram must trust and find his comfort in God as he is a stranger travelling from place to place in this inhabited land that God says will one day belong to his children whom he doesn’t have yet.

God appears and speaks to Abram, and Abram is careful that it is not a one-sided conversation, so he worships God, to praise and thank Him for what He has done, admit his helplessness, and ask God for help. This regular worship of God is Abram’s habit wherever he goes.
